Synopsis: This seminar will explore the findings of a recently completed study which examined the primary school transition experiences of children from BME, migrant and refugee backgrounds in Edinburgh, Scotland. Data was collected through observations, interviews and focus groups and involved children, their families and professionals with expertise in this area. The study was funded by the Froebel Trust and was completed with the support of the 4-2-7 Project at the Multi-Cultural Family Base, a local charity with twenty years of experience working with BME, migrant and refugee communities.
The seminar will reflect on the multiple, complex, concurrent transition experiences of the children and families in this study and the supports that they found helpful. It will also explore the value of group work as a specific approach to supporting primary school transitions, reflecting on the practice experiences of practitioners from the Multi-Cultural Family Base in Edinburgh.
Speakers: Dr Autumn Roesch-Marsh is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at The University of Edinburgh and was the Principle Investigator on this project. She is a qualified social worker with experience of working directly with children of all ages and her research has always sought to explore the complex realities of day-to-day practice. Her co-authored book, A Guide to Therapeutic Childcare (2016), highlights how every day care practices can nurture development and support recovery from trauma and abuse. Autumn has two daughters and is a parent volunteer in her local nursery and primary school.
Dr Fiona Morrison is a Lecturer at the Centre for Child Wellbeing and Protection at the University of Stirling and was the Co-Investigator on this project. Fiona has extensive experience researching the experiences of children and families and is currently leading the research project ‘Children’s Participation in Family Actions – Probing Compliance with Children’s Human Rights’.
Emma Watt is a qualified Social Worker and Project Worker in the 4-2-7 Project at the Multi-Cultural Family Base.
Steve Gowenlock is a Social Worker, Practice Teacher and the Chief Executive of the Multi-Cultural Family Base. He was one of the first staff to set up transition groups within the organisation twenty years ago.
